This book is the first comprehensive monograph to focus on the visionary French architect Roger Anger, recipient of the 1967 Belgian Premier Prix International d'Architecture. A sculptural plasticity and a highly individual take on the Modernist vernacular infuse all of his work; but Anger, who died in 2008, will be remembered for his ambitious master plan for the utopian Indian city of Auroville, based on the idea of a proliferating, open-ended galaxy, designed to be self-sufficient and promoted as the "dream of a new city for the future" and a haven from sectarianism and nationialism. A graduate of Paris's Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Anger arrived in India in 1956; within the space of a decade, he had risen to become Auroville's chief architect, and the essence of his work as an architect, painter and sculptor is reflected in that unique construction. The volume documents Anger's prolific and innovative projects of the 1950s and 1960s, which include more than 100 buildings, such as Grenoble's L'Ile Verte, three 28-storey housing towers, which were for some time the highest residential buildings in Europe. Cafés, hotels, and restaurants are at the core of the impact of modernity. With these places of pleasure and leisure, new architectural forms were promoted, creating the perfect setting for the public performance and image cultivation of urbanites in the emerging metropolises of the world. At the heart of many urban myths, cafés are celebrated as intangible sacred halls where works of art were produced, revolutions plotted, lives made, and hearts broken. Cafés serve as the background to public display and sociability. The novel reading of the history of the hotel offers new insight into the context of social performance, analyzing the development of tourism with its urbanization of former natural landscapes. Paris heralded the emergence of the restaurant. As a cultural institution it represents the century-old culinary tradition and as such it is an antidote to the accelerated consumption of fast food.
By outlining the specific architectural, cultural and social spaces that helped forming the modern metropolis, Franziska Bollerey provides surprising new perspectives in a well-informed tour d’horizon—which is, above all, a true pleasure to read.
